Roodepoort crime stats lower, but worrisome

Higher number of contact crimes is a cause for concern.

With the release of the April 2012 to March 2013 Crime Statistics, Roodepoort SAPS showed a general decrease in crime, even though some of their stats are the highest on the West Rand.

The higher number of contact crimes is a cause for concern, with total sexual crimes from 224 up to 265, and assault GBH from 570 up to 582.

The rest of the contact crimes decreased as follows: murder (from 78 to 73); attempted murder (from 64 to 47); common assault (from 831 to 736); common robbery (from 263 to 216) and robbery with aggravating circumstances (from 618 to 595).

Comforting decreases include burglary at residential premises (from 1 342 to 1 254) and theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle (from 704 to 548).

Sharply on the rise is drug-related crime (from 229 to 273); driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs (from 94 to 219) and shoplifting (from 556 to 728).
