Florida murders more than doubles

Four of the seven crime types show an increase.

The latest crime statistics for Florida SAPS for the period April 2012 to March 2013 revealed that the number of murders more than doubled from the previous year.

Apart from that, Florida SAPS showed an overall increase in crime from 2012 to 2013.

In the contact crime category, four of the seven crime types had increased: murder (from eight to 20); total sexual crimes (from 60 to 70); attempted murder (from 14 to 19); and assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm (from 213 to 227).

The other contact crimes include common assault (from 354 to 307); common robbery (from 135 to 101) and robbery with aggravating circumstances (from 414 to 412).

Also on the increase in this area is drug-related crime for which 310 cases were reported as opposed to last year’s 212. Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs shot to 93 from last year’s 62.

Criminal trends to be aware of include carjacking (from 70 to 82); truck hijacking (from three to seven) and robbery at residential premises (from 56 to 81).

On the lighter side, car and motorcycle theft decreased from 545 to 491.
