Hawks to investigate striking City Power saboteurs

City Power employees sow chaos.

Disgruntled City Power employees allegedly are behind the power outages that paralysed 25 suburbs, including some in and around Roodepoort, since 5 September.

Although some are sceptical, City Power stated that participants in a wildcat strike had sabotaged various grids. The SAPS had to stand guard at substations to prevent further sabotage.

According to City Power spokesperson, Sol Masolo, all power would have been back on by 9 September.

In the meanwhile the Hawks are busy identifying employees responsible for cutting the power supply. South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) has launched their own investigation.

The unprotected strike is the result of the introduction of a new shift system that is aimed at cutting the City’s R213-million-per-year overtime bill.
