Explosives discovered in Durban Deep

SAPS identifies explosive as dynamite.

Drugs and illegal firearms are not the only things security service providers should be on the lookout for after a security company and the police found what was believed to be a stick of dynamite lodged in a wall at a house in Durban Deep on Friday 6 September.

According to Anton Smith, managing director of SAVIP Protection Security, “Officers were patrolling a vacant house belonging to Dino Properties in Durban Deep on 6 September. We were asked to patrol the house as it has been vacant for at least two weeks. During our second night of patrol a security officer spotted an explosive in one of the walls.”

Smith describes the explosive as a stick of dynamite of plus minus 60cm in length, very thick and quite heavy, with an estimated weight of 800g. It is powerful enough to bring down a shopping centre.

“The officer immediately notified the control room and the South African Police Service (SAPS) was called out.”

Roodepoort SAPS spokesperson Vincent Mashiteng confirmed that the explosive was identified as dynamite; the type that illegal miners use.

“We unfortunately could not arrest anyone as the suspects managed to escape.”
