Toastmasters, “where leaders are made”

Florida Toastmasters takes pride in its members.

Toastmasters is an organisation that has clubs in countries all over the world and embraces different cultures and languages to accommodate different people.

However, as a first-time Toastmasters participant within just a few months of having joined the programme, you most probably will realise how the capacity of your dreams and ambitions will have accelerated into the direction that you prefer, according to Florida Toastmasters public relations officer Dawn Hemming.

“It is quite an overwhelming experience – but with the needed focus, there is no chance of you falling off track.

“Essentially what happens is that you become aware of your greatest capabilities, you become willing to take justified risks and you gain the self-confidence that you always wanted.

“But, the trick is that you have to be aware of your ability in order to expand your capability.”

Hemming expresses pride in a member’s achievement to start a college club.

On 6 August at St Augustine College, a Florida Toastmasters member held a meeting that was aimed at enhancing cultural activities. This was after the Corporate WinterCon for Toastmasters International event that took place at Anglo American in Johannesburg in July, which featured motivational speaker Douglas Kruger.

The meeting was led by a member of the Florida Toastmasters Club, Professor Micheal Glencross.

More such meetings at the college will be held twice a month during lunch breaks. The meetings will be open to all students from the campus.

At the Florida Toastmasters award ceremony on 20 August, Onelenna Mtezuka received a trophy for best prepared speech. She is a qualified Latin-American and ballroom dancing instructor. Dick Hallett and Margaret Roodt tied for the Best Impromptu vote.

The Florida Toastmasters Club meets at 7.15pm at the Huguenot Restaurant at Flora Centre every first and third Tuesday of the month.
