City extends deadline for property valuation objections

City objects to 63 000 properties' value.

The MMC for Finance and the Chief Evaluator of the City, Geoffrey Makhubo, has announced that the new General Property Valuation Roll has generated 88 000 objections (representing 11 per cent of the total roll).

Of the 88 000 objections received, 63 000 objections are by the City itself and 25 000 are from owners and third parties.

The City of Johannesburg has submitted its own objections to the values given to 63 000 properties in the 2013 General Valuation Roll and issued statutory notices dated 31 May to the affected owners, requiring affected residents to submit comment and representations by 14 July.

These notices were posted too late to reach the owners in time or were delivered too late by the Post Office.

The City now has extended the deadline date to 16 August.

Property owners are advised to do the following:

• Submit written comment on what they believe is the correct market value of the property as at 2 July. This is the effective date of valuation.

• This comment should be accompanied by written confirmation by an estate agent who is well acquainted with property values in the area.

• The letter from the City must accompany the comment. Each of those letters contains a PIN number and Objection Number specific to the affected property.

• The documents must be delivered to the 4th Floor, A Block, Metro Centre, 158 Civic Boulevard, Braamfontein.

No email or fax submissions will be accepted.

It is advisable to take a duplicate of the front page of the comment and get a dated and signed receipt for safekeeping.
