Team effort to warm less fortunate
City's role players team up to bring winter relief.
It is your worst nightmare. Waking up to realise that your shelter is on fire and while you can escape death, your possessions might not be so fortunate.
For many Roodepoort residents, this is something they would read about in the media and something that is not likely to happen to them.
Reality is Roodepoorters often lose their shelters to natural disasters (fires, storms, et cetera). Let’s not forget the tornado that tore through Roodepoort years ago. Disasters can strike at any given moment, and if you are not prepared, it could mean the end of your life as you know it.
There are entities that aim to comfort disaster victims, but they cannot do it alone.
In a combined effort, the City of Johannesburg, Region C Disaster Management/ EMS, Councillor Gert Niemand, Dorcas Aid and the Roodepoort Record and Caxton Printing will attempt to collect up to 2 000 blankets before the end of this year.
The goal is to be able to help the poor and victims of disasters, to involve the community in poverty and disaster relief and generally to improve the way in which the residents and major role players in Region C work together.
According to Niemand the aim is to have enough blankets to distribute in any case of disaster or need.
Blankets can be dropped off at the Dorcas Aid Office (4 Madeline Street, Florida), City of Joburg – Region C Civic Centre (100 Christiaan de Wet Drive, Florida) or the Record’s offices (corner of Ham Street and Generaal Pienaar Avenue, Witpoortjie).
