The Staccatos postpone all remaining gigs due to Covid-19
'Because we are all on lockdown, we cannot perform to make a living. Entertaining is our only source of income!'
“The Covid-19 pandemic has really dealt the music industry a huge blow. We thrive on events, but because of the nationwide lockdown, we cannot perform to make a living. Entertaining is our only source of income!”
These are the sentiments of Ebeth Loots, who is a promoter and an artist manager. She is the brain behind the Staccatos Comeback initiative. Ebeth is also the project leader and manages Steve Ashley, front man for the original as well as the revived The Staccatos.
She explained that The Staccatos have been on an extended Barnyard Tour, and said, “Our performances at the Barnyard Suncoast (Durban), Rivonia, Menlyn (Pretoria), Tyger Valley (Cape Town) and a appearance as main act at the Omaruru Arts Festival in Namibia in August, as well as a few corporate gigs have all been postponed.”
Ebeth added that the band was formed by Brian Le Gassick in 1961, while he was still studying. During 1962 and 1963, the band played at many sessions and other gigs around Johannesburg and the Reef. “But in 1999 they disbanded. Then, 21 years later, I approached Brian and former lead vocalist, Steve – whose solo career I have been managing for your years – and convinced them to join forces. In 2019 they reformed the band, and performed their show, THE STACCATOS REVIVAL. The boys are back live,” she said.
The band features the legendary founder, Brian (guitar and vocals) and the phenomenal Steve (again on vocals). They are backed by a five-piece supporting band consisting of Connie Bentlage (keyboards, saxophone and vocals), Mias Lotz (drums), Trevor Muller (bass guitar), Jaco Smit (lead guitar), and Jo Day (backing vocals).
