Call us instead of your ‘resident handyman’ – Eskom

The whole country is in lockdown, some might be tempted to start fixing everything that needed fixing for quite some time

Eskom said while it is helpful to have someone in the house who is handy and can fix things such as door handles and a dripping tap, and change light bulbs, do not, however, let your resident handyman fix anything more than that bulb.

According to Miranda Moahlodi, Senior Manager (Occupational Health and Safety) at Eskom, “Anything else electrical should be a no-no”.

She explained that since the whole country is in lockdown, some might be tempted to start fixing everything that needed fixing for quite some time.

“That is admirable and useful, but fiddling with electricity can be downright dangerous. Changing a light bulb is okay. Just remember that you should always switch off the electricity before attempting any repairs.

“Yet it is best to call in trained electricians who know what they are doing and who will be careful around electricity.

In serious cases, call Eskom on 08600 37566 or contact your local municipality.”

Miranda added, “During this lockdown, it might be a good idea to do some basic checking, for example, are all electric cords in good order, and are connections between cords and plugs safe and secure.

Make sure that not too many extension cords are used to plug in too many appliances into one power point, and used at the same time.

“In general, she added, look for faulty plugs and switches, old appliances, faulty light fixtures, and damaged or exposed wiring.

“Be on the lookout for but do not try to rectify illegal connections. They are dangerous, as too often the wires are exposed and not properly covered. Again, call Eskom! It is a good time to warn children about the dangers of electricity.

And keep in mind: water and electricity do not mix, water can conduct electricity and cause injury, or even death. Your in-house DIY guy must simply be doubly careful. Still, it is much better to call in a trained electrician for anything beyond the most basic repairs, said Miranda.

She concluded that Eskom continuously runs public-safety programmes to educate people about the proper use of electricity. It is committed not only to delivering electric power, but ensuring it’s used safely.
