Lockdown cuts wings of organisation providing for needy children

'The burden is huge and the funds very little at this stage; every little bit will now make a huge difference' – Wings of Inspiration appealing for donations to help the destitute.

The impact of the global Covid-19 pandemic has been particularly brutal on non-profit organisations (NPOs), resulting in their only source of income – donations from the public – drying up.

One of these NPOs is Helderkruin-based Wings of Inspiration Care Centre that takes care of 89 children and 24 elders, as well as all their families. ”After the Easter weekend and the coronavirus outbreak, we really are in dire straits to survive just on what we still have. Because of the lockdown, many of our dear supporters have not helped yet and this is very hard for us. Our weekly budget to assist those in our care is R25 000, and this is for all the crisis centres. The burden is huge and the funds very little at this stage; every little bit will now make a huge difference. We need to feed them and with winter here, we also need blankets and warm clothing for our children,” one of the organisation’s founders, Anthea Da Costa explained.

She added that, in order for them to comply with the stringent hygiene measures put in place to fight the coronavirus, they are in desperate need of more sanitizer, masks and vitamins.
She mentioned that many individuals and businesses were quick to support Government’s initiatives to combat the pandemic, such as the Solidarity Fund.

”Although Wings of Inspiration applauds all the aforementioned companies and individuals that support these goals, the reality is that it does impact adversely on donations channelled to us as an organisation. This leaves us to fend for ourselves and finance our efforts to continue supporting the vulnerable we serve. We are still fully operational and need donations to meet all our obligations. At this stage we need help urgently; we are really in trouble,” a distraught Anthea said.

She reminded those who wish to make a donation, that is tax-deductable, and said, ”I would like to appeal to you to forward the proof of payment so that I can process all the relevant documentation you need to claim your money back from SARS”.
