Easter is a religious holiday that is celebrated all over the world by the various Christian communities, usually by gatherings in churches from Easter Friday until Easter Sunday.
While Easter eggs and bunnies, hot crossed buns and pickled fish were still visible in stores, the usual echo of Easter celebrations was missing.
The national lockdown brought an Easter experience like no other; one that was silent. With church gatherings being restricted, South African churches had to opt to digital methods to deliver their sermons.
At a time when being off one’s phone was the usual order of business, this year congregations put the volume on loud to receive and share sermons from their religious leaders.
Online engagement saw a record high this Easter, with churches around the world reminding people to stay at home. South African churches shared pre-recorded videos and messages to their congregations through social media platforms.
The national lockdown has had a gripping effect on our daily life experiences. People took the time to share Easter meal habits and preferences, such as enjoying pickled fish with hot crossed buns, or having your hot crossed buns toasted or not. We will probably look back at 2020 as the most memorable Easter in our lifetime.
