Stay home; it is the right thing to do!

How difficult can it be to understand? We just need to stay at home to save countless lives!

As I am writing this, we have just entered our first day of the 21-day lockdown period announced by our President amid the global Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic.

To say I am disappointed in my fellow citizens, might be putting it mildly, as I am really not sure exactly what word to use to express my feelings towards the behaviour I have seen so far.

It seems to me that people really do not understand what it means to be on lockdown, and being instructed to stay at home. Yes, I know that there are people who still have to go to work to render essential services. I, as well as my husband who is a policeman, fall under this banner (even though I am in the fortunate position to be working remotely). I also understand that people do need to buy food and that not everybody was lucky enough to be able to do it before the lockdown.

What I do not have understanding for, are the many people still carrying on with their day to day activities, as if it is business as usual. People are still jogging, cycling, visiting each other, walking on the streets in groups and yes, having parties.

By the time of writing this, our first two Covid-19 related deaths have been reported and the Health Minister announced that the number of confirmed cases just passed the 1 000 mark; scary if you think that our first case was reported a mere three weeks ago.

And, as I am trying my utmost best to comply with instructions given by the President and staying at home, I am demanding from my fellow citizens to do the same. Stop being blasé, ignorant or even arrogant to think it will not affect you, and do your part. Remember, I might be able to fight the virus, and you might be able to fight the virus, but, can you be 100 per cent sure that the next person, who contracted it from you, will be able to?

I will leave you with this thought, ‘To save a nation, your grandparents were called to war. You are called to sit on your couch and watch Netflix. Do your part!’

Until next week, stay safe and healthy …
