The world’s toughest canoe endurance event, known as the Dusi Canoe Marathon, kicked off on Thursday, 27 February and ended on Saturday, 29 February.
A few paddlers from Florida Lake Canoe Club (FLCC) lined up at the starting point to show off their hard work and training in the 120km race from Pietermaritzburg to Durban.

The Dusi marathon has been an annual event since 1962 when Ian Player was the first paddler to complete the race with a few friends. Looking back at some of the first-ever canoe races, what paddlers endure today is nothing compared to what the early Dusi marathoners had gone through. Back then, it took the paddlers a week to complete the tough race in their large, wooden boats.
For the first time in the past five years, water levels were high, which made conditions much more enjoyable.
FLCC’s very own paddlers, Hardus Theunissen and Tristan Trican were the club’s top finishers, ending the marathon in the overall 146th place with a time of 12 hours and three minutes over the three-day course.
