Western Hockey Club provides superior training for school players

Their mission for the new year is to get mini hockey to explode in Roodepooort.

Western Hockey Club (WHC) was founded in 2019, with a view to providing superior training for school children in the Roodepoort region.

The club is registered as a non-profit organisation and caters for all enthusiastic players from the age of four to 16.

Last year they entered four teams, U/13 girls, U/15 girls, Open boys, and Open girls in the Southern Gauteng Junior Hockey (SGJH) league. During the SGJH Champion of Champions, a tournament played with the aim of determining the province’s best U/13 boys and girls teams, WHC’s girls team topped their pool and ended in the overall fourth position.

“We rely on the support of our players’ moms and dads when it comes to attending practices and league matches, and performing some of the behind-the-scenes tasks associated with running a sports clubs. But we strongly believe that what sets us apart from our peers is that a formal training programme underpins what we do, and is implemented on the field by coaches who are all actively involved in the game,” Tracey Morton from the WHC stated.

Their mission for the new year is to get mini-hockey to explode in Roodepoort area. According to WHC there is a massive geographical gap between established clubs in Randburg and Krugersdorp, and that a huge pool of talent is waiting to be exploited and developed.

“Our experience tells us a number of things about the impact of mini hockey on our children and community. The majority of provincial players in high school and senior leagues learned the game in the mini environment. Primary school children who play club hockey between April and August every year, perform significantly better in the school league system, which only starts in the third term. They are already fit, their muscle memory for hockey skills is in place, and they have learned game play and strategy ahead of their team mates,” Tracy explained.

WHC promises to help all players and return them with more self-confidence, and an understanding of success as a team.

Mini hockey starts from U/5, U/9, U/11 and U/13. These age group will train on Saturday mornings at Trinity Randpark Astro.

Southern Gauteng Junior Hockey is from ages U/13 to U/16, and will train on astro every Wednesday evening. For any information regarding the mini hockey, contact Thana on 079 898 1025 or email them at western.grizzlies@gmail.com.
