Allegedly drunk men attempt to sell dog to shelter

Community Led Animal Welfare receive bizarre proposition

Animal welfare organisations across the city are inundated with unwanted and stray animals on a daily basis. While the severity of the cruelty and callousness varies, an incident of rare absurdity occurred on Monday, 9 March.

Four men brought a young neutered male dog into Community Led Animal Welfare (CLAW) looking to sell the visibly stressed animal to the organisation. “They were clearly drunk and anyone knows that we would never buy an animal,” stresses Cora Bailey of CLAW. “The men claimed they needed money to visit a sick grandmother. They initially demanded R800,” she continued.

The dog was kept at CLAW while the men were taken to two addresses in Sol Plaatje, Roodepoort in an attempt to prove ownership. “Neighbours confirmed that they had never seen the dog. We then went to the other address they gave us. Nobody there had ever heard of them or seen the dog,” recounted Cora.

When returning to CLAW the men left without the dog and he is now at CLAW waiting to be claimed. “He is in good condition but extremely stressed. He is also very frightened of the leash,” she said.

CLAW has photos of the men and if someone were to come forward and prove ownership of the dog, these could be used to open a criminal case. Should anyone have any other information they are asked to call, WhatsApp or SMS CLAW on 082 926 3627 or 076 850 4466.
