Youth getting to see both sides of the police

Social Crime Prevention continues with school-awareness projects

Crime is a stubborn enemy and a strong hand is needed to vanquish this enemy. This is why the Social Crime Prevention unit in Roodepoort is taking a two-pronged approach to educating the youth on the dangers and consequences of crime.

Together with the positive message of Roodepoort Police’s Adopt-a-Cop programme, which tackles important subjects with informative discussions, police will also conduct spot raids of schools around Roodepoort. Without warning the police could descend on a school to flush out any contraband, illegal substances or worse.

First to experience the lockdown and search was Hoërskool Roodepoort on Wednesday, 12 February. Members from Roodepoort Police, K9 unit, Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department, Community Safety and Social Crime Prevention, private security companies and CPF patrollers searched a total of 18 classrooms over a three-hour period. No severe confiscations were reported though, other than several packs of cigarettes.

The raids will continue under the ‘special disruptive operations’ banner in Roodepoort Police’s ongoing campaign to reach out to the youth. Topics addressed in discussions with learners are discipline, bullying, cyberbullying, dangerous weapons and substance abuse.

The children and the public in general are asked to utilise the Crime Stop tip-off line 08600 10111 and to download the MySAPS app as a modern weapon in the crime-fighting arena.
