Vervet monkey saved from opportunist in Noordheuwel

The little monkey will become part of a troop and eventually be released back into the wild.

The Roodepoort/ Krugersdorp Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) recently received a call about a baby Vervet monkey being sold.

“Mankind just cannot leave wild animals alone,” a post on the SPCA’s Facebook page said.

In Noordheuwel they found the man and the tiny monkey tied with a rope.

“The individual claimed he had found the baby with his dead mother in the mountains,” the post explained. However, he could not explain where he had found the dead mother and baby.

The baby was removed and taken to a rehabilitation centre.

The SPCA manager, Mandy Cattanach, explained that a lot of these monkeys are confiscated from people and sent to the rehabilitation centre. There they make a little troop with all the rescued monkeys and when they are ready, they release the troop back into the wild.

This baby will also be released back into the wild eventually.

Mandy said that the public can phone them if they ever witness or know of a situation where these monkeys are taken as pets.
