Roodepoort most affected by power outages due to rain

At least 614 calls were logged by customers by 7am this morning

City Power has communicated that they are dealing with high volume of calls due to several outages across the City of Johannesburg due to rain.

According to the power utility spokesperson, Isaac Mangena, at least 614 calls were logged by customers by 7am this morning (Saturday,8 February), with almost half of those coming from Roodepoort.

“Most of the calls report faults that happened after loadshedding restorations,” he said.

“Our infrastructure gets strained during loadshedding due to the massive loads shifting when Power is switched on and off,” he explained.

Mangena assured that City Power has beefed up resources to attend to these calls.
However, stormy rains also contribute to the delays in repairs and restorations, due to safety concerns.

“Roodepoort accounted to 324 of the calls reported by 7am on Saturday.
This is due to the multiple faults that plunged most of the area into darkness since Thursday night. Among the problems experienced was the overhead line that was hit by lightning during the rains on Thursday night. Others were due to equipment failures during loadshedding restorations, and cable theft and faults.”

“We urge customers to bear with us as we attend to these calls. Our resources are stretched but effort has been made to increase resources in problematic areas with many calls,” Mangena explained, further urging customers who experience outages while not on loadshedding schedule to report such outages so that they can be attended to.

He also advised that loadshedding has been declared at Stage 2 on Saturday, and the schedule is on the City Power website or follow @CitypowerJHB on Twitter for regular updates.
