New spectacles for homeless William
While testing his eyes she realised that William required a specialised lens to suit his specific needs.
When optometrist/ manager of Spectacle Warehouse Hillfox, Hanese Jansen van Rensburg was approached by good Samaritans regarding William Kelly who found himself in a difficult position, she did not hesitate to jump to the needy man’s rescue.
William, who stays in a homeless shelter in Newlands, had his spectacles broken and could not afford to buy himself a new pair. Hanese was kind enough and offered to do the eye test and provide the spectacles for free.
While testing his eyes she realised that William required a specialised lens to suit his specific needs.
Hanese went as far as approaching Essilor, one of the leading spectacle lens providers, to assist in sourcing the lenses for her patient.
“They were on board immediately. They got the lenses for me and cut them to a frame at no charge. I also asked Dr Herman Roodt, a trusted ophthalmologist in Roodepoort, to assess the health of William’s eyes,” said the enthusiastic Hanese.
The good doctor did a comprehensive examination of William’s eyes, also at no charge.
A happy William received his brand-new pair of spectacles on Saturday, 1 February. When the Northsider asked him how he was feeling, he expressed his joy and thanked all the parties involved. “I am so grateful to these kind-hearted people who did not hesitate to help me, even though I am a stranger to them. May the good Lord bless you,” said a very emotional William.
Hanese said, “At Spectacle Warehouse we strive to provide eye care to all and will always be available to assist in any way we can and give back to the community”.
