After a long and gruelling wait, the Panorama Pikitup Garden Site is finally open to the public after being renovated.
During its closure, Allen’s Nek residents voiced their concerns because of the lack of upgrade operations and claimed that the prolonged closure had led people to dump their waste on neighbouring properties. In February 2019, Northsider journalist, Siso Naile, received comment from Pikitup’s spokesperson, Muzi Mkhwanazi, saying that the renovations would be completed in July or August of last year. Finally, on 27 January 2020 Pikitup issued a notice, saying that the site is now open to the public.
The self-service site will also be operational on all public holidays, apart from Christmas Day (25 December). The operating hours are between 8am and 5pm from Monday through to Sunday.
Pikitup has requested that residents who will be using the facilities to dispose of bagged garden waste, in small quantities, follow the rules listed below:
• The facility will only be open to domestic users for the disposal of their garden waste
• At this stage, no recycling materials will be allowed
• No building rubble is allowed into the site. Residents can open an account and dispose of the rubble at a landfill site
• No furniture or bulky items are allowed (residents can log a call on 011 375 5555 for free bulk collections)
• No unsound food is allowed
• Residents who make use of the garden site are asked to follow the directions of the uniformed attendants and security guards
• Admittance is only granted for permissible items
While the Panorama Compost Plant is used predominantly as a drop-off for bulk green waste, during the time that the garden site is not allowing recyclable materials, all recyclable items can be dropped off at the compost plant.
The rules and operating hours for the compost plant are the same as for the garden site, except recyclable materials are allowed to be dropped off at the compost plant.
As mentioned above, the operating hours are from 8am to 5pm, Monday to Sunday, and all public holidays apart from Christmas Day.
All residents who will be using the self-service Compost Plant are asked to comply with the following rules:
• No building rubble will be permitted onto the site. As mentioned above, residents are asked to open an account and take the rubble to a landfill site
• No furniture or bulky items are allowed. Calls for free bulk removals can be logged on 011 375 5555
• No unsound food is allowed
• Residents who make use of the compost plant are asked to follow the directions of the uniformed attendants and security guards
• Admittance is only granted for permissible items
Both the Panorama Garden Site and the Panorama Compost Plant are located at Panorama AH in Roodepoort. For any queries, residents are asked to log a call on 011 375 5555.
