The City of Johannesburg’s (CoJ) Rates Policy review is kicking off with city-wide public meetings.
The newly elected Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC), councillor Jolidee Matongo, and the CoJ ward councillors will be addressing Roodepoort residents on Johannesburg’s Property Rates Policy review process.
The annual review process categorises and defines all properties within Johannesburg’s borders. It allows for CoJ to assign a tariff to the property values determined in the General Valuation Roll and therefore allows the City to generate rates revenue.
MMC Matongo said that active community participation in crafting this policy is essential. He has urged residents and councillors to attend the meetings which will be held throughout Johannesburg. He continued to describe the importance of these meetings by saying, “It is a well-known fact that the City generates most of its revenue through levying rates and taxes. By choosing to invest in property within the borders of the city, property owners must see themselves as ‘shareholders’ in Joburg’s developmental agenda.”
CoJ has extended the public meetings to 10 additional sites in an effort to ensure a broader reach. In Region C there will be two public meetings, one on 3 February and one on 4 February.
The meeting on 3 February will be held from 6pm to 8pm at the Roodepoort Civic Centre, which is situated at 100 Christiaan de Wet Road in Florida Park.
The meeting on 4 February will also be held from 6pm to 8pm, but at the Cosmo City Multi-Purpose Centre on Angola Drive in Cosmo City.
Residents are urged to attend one of the meetings to contribute to the review of the rates policy. The new policy will come into effect as of 1 July 2020.
To prepare for the meeting, attendees are encouraged to download the current Rates Policy from the CoJ website: https://www.joburg.org.za.
