Word of the day

The word of the day for 23 January is: Imagination.

The Oxford English Dictionary defines imagination as the action of forming new ideas, images or concepts of external objects not present to the senses. It is the ability of the mind to be creative or resourceful.

Robin Williams said that we are only given one spark of madness, and we mustn’t lose it. Your imagination stems from your creativity, from your ability to dream up new ideas and possibilities. William Blake said, “What is now proved was once only imagined.”

Our imagination and creativity help us grow because we are open to new ways to improve and we see things in a different way than other people might. Albert Einstein said that imagination is more important than knowledge because while knowledge is limited, imagination encircles the world.

If people don’t imagine new possibilities, ideas, and processes then nothing new will ever be invented and the problems that still exist today will remain unsolved. We need to think of things in a way that only we can, and execute our creative plans. Gloria Steinem said, “Without leaps of imagination, or dreaming, we lose the excitement of possibilities. Dreaming, after all, is a form of planning.”

If we feel strongly about something, and believe fully in our ability to do it, then no one should be able to stop us. Just because someone else might tell you that your plan will never work, it doesn’t mean they are right. We don’t need to look at things in a one sided way just because people tell us to; we need to think outside of the box. Vincent Van Gogh said, “Do not quench your inspiration and your imagination; do not become the slave of your model.”
