Poorte prepare for 2020 Gold Cup

Poorte displayed some breathtaking running rugby in the 2019 Pirates Grand Challenge (PGC) but a long unbeaten streak was ended with a few losses towards the end of the season.

RotoTank Roodepoort Rugby Club has officially started preparing for its campaign in the 2020 SARU Gold Cup and training is in full swing at Ruimsig Stadium.

Poorte displayed some breathtaking running rugby in the 2019 Pirates Grand Challenge (PGC) but a long unbeaten streak was ended with a few losses towards the end of the season.

The return of club stalwart Byron Godfrey from retirement added to Poorte’s impressive first-leg performance, but later in the season his absence was felt.

Loose forward Astley Spook van Wyk had moments of brilliance, scoring impressive tries with the assistance of a hard running loose trio in almost every match.

Outside centre Brendon Rieck with his bone-crunching tackles and capability with the boot proved to be vital in the heart of Poorte’s defence.

Club President Mathys Booyens said, “Our first fixtures are scheduled for later in February and players need to get match-ready for a long season, which includes the SSG Gold Cup qualifiers and potential international friendlies.”

Training for the U/19s and U/21s is on Mondays and Wednesdays, and the seniors train on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6.15pm.

Roodepoort Rugby Club will also be starting a ladies team to compete in the Pirates Grand Challenge this season, and training is Wednesdays at 6.30pm.

Ladies coach Danielle van Rooyen said, “All ladies are welcome to join the team as soon as possible as we need to prepare for the season ahead”.
