Colombian Researchers visit Zandspruit

A number of topics were discussed that included social development, child protection policy, issues of drug abuse and teenage pregnancy.

Wednesday 8 January saw a delegation from Columbia University make a visit to Zandspruit informal settlement to meet up with Michael Mapfunde of Football Without Borders (FWB) NGO.

FWB is one of two organisations that have been selected in South Africa by international partner, Coaches Across Continents (CAC) which focuses on Football and Life skills Programs.

The Northsider was fortunate to be part of the meeting held at Realeboga Creche next to Zandspruit Clinic were a research was conducted on FWB.

Mapfunde who holds a Degree in Social Studies said, “FWB focuses on fighting social issues in our communities through football and creating a sporting environment that makes it easier for the youth to relate and divert from crime and other bad habits associated with growing up.”

FWB offers boxing and soccer training to the children of Zandspruit and the organisation uses sport as a book to teach the children valuable life skills.
