Ward 89 councillor Amelia Bester has criticised those who dumped refuse illegally at Hillfox Value Centre, which is a private business property in Weltevreden Park.
In a Facebook post, Amelia complained about residents dumping household waste at the Hillfox Centre recycling hub.
“This is an illegal activity on a private property,” she warned. A photo she published on Facebook depicted piles of garbage all over the recycling area, and a skip bin overloaded with trash.
This act is believed to have been propelled by the alleged lack of services by Pikitup during the festive season. However, Amelia refuted this excuse saying, “Pikitup has been servicing our bins throughout the festive season in spite of breakdowns. Where breakdowns occurred, they’ve communicated alternative collection dates on their website and social media platforms.
“Let’s not behave like barbarians please,” she pleaded. “If you sort your waste, you’ll find that there’s a small amount of rotting waste to be collected; the rest is recyclable. On collection day the recyclables can be left outside in bags for waste pickers,” she encouraged.
Amelia also informed residents about a note sent by the Region C Pikitup Depot manager regarding the availability of bins.
“Please note that there are still no bins in stock in the whole of Pikitup. I believe the tender will be closing mid-January and then the submissions still need to be adjudicated. I would think mid-February is a more realistic date,” she explained.
