Baby found among refuse in Fleurhof

Ward Councillor Caleb Finn urges mothers to seek alternatives for unwanted babies.

Unwanted pregnancies are unfortunately far too common and when parents feel overwhelmed and desperate, it can lead to horrific results.

One such outcome reared its ugly head when a baby was found in a rubbish bin in Fleurhof on Friday,  3 January.

The discovery was made by a residential development security guard in Fever Tree Street shortly before 9pm on Friday evening. Moks Security were on scene to help shield the public from the distressing sight.  Director Thato Mokotsolane confirmed, “The baby was deceased and wrapped in a towel and black refuse bag”.

Ward 70 councillor, Caleb Finn, made an impassioned plea via his Facebook page urging people to take a more humane approach when dealing with unexpected and unwanted pregnancies.

Organisations exist that can assist you through the process, please don’t end the life of an innocent child but rather seek help,” he stressed.

Two organisations mentioned specifically by councillor Finn, were Lil Choices and Baby Moses Children’s Sanctuary. Lil Choices is based in Florida North and is run by Rae Bagus and she is available on 082 78 26018. Baby Moses is based in Wilro Park and they can be contacted on 011 768 7600.

Finn was also blunt in his advice for fathers by concluding, “Men, I also encourage you to step up and take responsibility for your unborn child. Let us look after one another and make a safe space for women, especially young women, to share their fears and worries”.

Florida Police was contacted for comment, and, as soon as it is received, a follow up article will be published.
