Security companies concerned about carelessness
The increasing number of vehicle thefts and break-ins in the sector was a result of vehicles being left unattended outside properties and shopping centres.
At a recent Honeydew Sector 2 Community Policing Forum (CPF) meeting security companies complained about negligent homeowners who do not inform them when they host parties so that they could keep an eye on their property and the attendees’ vehicles.
The increasing number of vehicle thefts and break-ins in the sector was a result of vehicles being left unattended outside properties and shopping centres.
However, security companies, whose members are usually the first responders at crime scenes, attributed the scourge to the carelessness of homeowners.
“Car theft is a problem because the community is failing us,” said Beagle Watch security officer, France Shao as he reflected on the crimes committed in November.
“Residents do not inform us when they are going to have a party, but contact us only when something has gone wrong,” Shao said.
The chairperson of the CPF, Neville Burnett, urged residents to use dedicated car guard when hosting functions.
Referring to shoppers who had bought Black Friday’s bargains, residents were reminded to refrain from leaving the empty boxes of their new electronic equipment outside their property, as this careless act invites criminals to target the property.
Burnett was also unhappy about the dwindling number of Resident Associations attending CPF meetings. “There are 16 RAs, but the attendance is pathetic,” he criticised. “It’s sad that these RAs are active only when they have a problem and come here to make a noise,” he said, adding that he hoped for a better attendance in the new year.
