Rugby World Cup inspires young artists
The local artists were invited to submit all mixed art pieces for various rugby teams who were representing their nations in Japan
The Rugby Through Our Eyes Arts initiative, in partnership with Laerskool Florida, called for art submissions from the local youth in the Roodepoort area between 29 September and 2 November, which was displayed in Westgate Super Regional Shopping Centre.
This mixed arts competition and exhibition took place during the Rugby World Cup and was showcased for all community members to see.

The local artists were invited to submit all mixed art pieces for various rugby teams who were representing their nations in Japan during the tournament. All participates had the opportunity to put their works on display for the surrounding communities to vote for their favourite piece to provide the top three winning groups with sponsored prizes to the value of R3 000.
On 18 November, representatives of of the shopping centre, announced that Laerskool Florida was in the top three, and had the honour of handing over their winning prize.

“The shopping centre sponsored the supplies for the kids to create their pieces of art while offering an inclusive space for creative thinking and artistic pursuits. All resources and methodology for meaningful arts engagement throughout the community were also provided. Our mission was to bridge diverse communities through the arts. We want the opportunity to hear the voices of those who grew up in Roodepoort,” Candice Perry, Westgate Mall Space Management and Brand Manager, concluded.
