Today in history: South African actor is born

It was his Boet character in a series of television advertisements for Castrol motor oil that brought him national fame and local icon status.

Famous South African actor, playwright and singer Ian Roberts was born on 30 November 1951 in Fort Beaufort in the Eastern Cape.

Roberts is a native English speaker and is also fluent in Afrikaans and Xhosa, which he learned while growing up in the Eastern Cape.

It was his Boet character in a series of television advertisements for Castrol motor oil that brought him national fame and local icon status.

This character together with Swaer and Moegoe have been featured in M-Net’s comedy series Kalahari Oasis as well as in his Radio Kalahari Orkes band.

In the Oscar-winning South African film Tsotsi, Roberts played the role of a police captain.

He has starred in several television series, mini-series and movies for which he has won numerous awards.
