Holidaymakers warned against property crimes
'It is important to inform your local police station, security company, Community Policing Forum (CPF) and Neighourhood Watch groups about the duration of your holiday so that they can keep an eye on your property.'
As the holiday season is upon us, most residents will be packing their bags and heading to their holiday destinations.
However, with the spike in criminal activities and households being targeted the most, the police have warned holidaymakers to take precautions before leaving.
Honeydew Police spokesperson, Captain Balan Muthan, offered some valuable safety tips to property owners to consider prior to leaving on holiday.
Muthan cited the importance of alerting the law enforcers, including the police when planning a getaway.
“It is important to inform your local police station, security company, Community Policing Forum (CPF) and Neighbourhood Watch groups about the duration of your holiday so that they can keep an eye on your property,” he urged.
While this method cannot guarantee the total safety of your property, Muthan also urged residents to employ or ask someone to house-sit, especially if the family has pets remaining behind. “If you are not taking your pets along, we urge you to take them to the SPCA, or get someone to take care of them and give them food and water,” he encouraged.
He also reminded residents of the most common mistakes homeowners make. “Make sure your doors and windows are locked. Make sure your electric fence and alarm system are functional and the post box is cleared,” Muthan encouraged.
For any crime-related incidents, residents are urged to contact 10 111.
