Don’t become a victim of the Black Friday madness

If you plan to participate in the shoving, pushing and pulling stampede of chaos, use these tips to stay safe.

Not many words or phrases have the power to scare me, but when it comes to the end of November, there are two words that absolutely terrify me – Black Friday!

For many people this is a day they have been looking forward to for almost a year. Many of them have also been planning their shopping spree meticulously, as they gleefully mark down the days on their calendar. And, in some instances, some may even have thrown in a maniacal chuckle or two, as they think about their diabolical plans to ensure they get the best deals/ bargains of this day.

I, on the other hand, have been watching the days pass with growing concern, and as Black Friday is almost upon us, this concern has turned into outright fear. I cannot comprehend why anyone would want to partake in this madness, and willingly subject themselves to being pushed, shoved, pulled or even physically abused by a crazy horde of stampeding people, whose minds have been clouded by the prospect of that one great deal/ bargain.

So, in an effort to help those who will be partaking in the Black Friday madness this year, I have done some research. Here are a few important tips that might help you not only survive the madness, but also get that great deal/ bargain:

• First of all, ensure you are dressed for the occasion. Wear your combat fatigues, boots and warpaint. You will need to ensure that your sprint game is strong. Emergency supplies like water and energy bars might also come in handy.

• Make sure you don’t brave this madness alone. Take along a buddy as this will ensure that one of you can stay at the trolley, while the other one grabs that coveted waffle pan. (Also, this will ensure that other shoppers will not be able to steal the items for which you have already done battle.)

• One of the most important safety tips is to never argue or fight over an item. No special is worth losing an eye, finger or part of your ear.

• Lastly, be courteous to you fellow Black Friday shoppers. Do not take items from their trolleys and if you see someone reaching for the same item as you are, be kind and pass your fellow warrior one too.

May all of you who are preparing for the Black Friday battle have a safe, fruitful and fun-filled outing, and come back as Black Friday survivors, ready to share your stories of horror – or success – with your children and their children.

Until next week …
