Today in history: Double International awards for Schalk Burger

Schalk became the first player to win both major categories in the International Rugby Players' Association event

On 23 November 2004, at the tender age of 21 years, South African rugby flanker, Schalk Burger, picked up two major international awards.

The talented loose forward won the International Rugby Players’ Association (IRPA) Player of the Year award and the International Newcomer honours from the International Rugby Union at a ceremony held in London.

Schalk became the first player to win both major categories in the International Rugby Players’ Association event.

In addition to these international awards, Burger also won the South African Player of the Year award the same year.
