Roodepoort Museum bursting with rich history

Journey from Stone Age to Gold Rush and beyond

The Roodepoort Museum is a hidden gem located in a quiet corner of the Roodepoort Civic Centre. Detailing the history of the area from its early Stone Age days to the discovery of gold, the museum captures the essence of this special part of Johannesburg.

Set up within the guidelines of being a social and cultural museum, it aims to tell the story of how and why the area evolved as it has. It takes you on a visual journey displaying relics of eras gone by, from rock samples dating back to prehistoric times to vintage ornaments of modern-day city dwellers.

Interspersed between exhibits of local history are chambers dedicated to international art, pottery and porcelain antiques. The social and cultural scope of the museum is fully explored as these displays showcase a wide variety of delicate pieces spanning the four corners of the world.

The museum’s flagship exhibits are time warps through early Roodepoort life. Several fully reconstructed examples of family homes ranging from early homesteads to post Great War luxury illustrate the significance of the gold that laces the soil of Roodepoort.
