Wanted suspect killed in Durban Deep shootout

Multiple-murder accused meets his end in open field

A man wanted in connection with multiple murders in the Roodepoort area was involved in a deadly shootout on Monday, 11 November. His accomplices, who are suspects in multiple crimes, were arrested and now face charges of attempted murder at the very least.

Having tracked the man and his accomplices to Skomplaas hostel in Durban Deep, the police were set up for a deadly stand-off when the three suspects were tipped off about their imminent arrival. The shootout started as soon as the two immovable forces met, with the police hitting one suspect in the left thigh, resulting in him being taken to Leratong Hospital for treatment.

Another suspect attempted to flee but was shot in the chest. He was certified dead when his body was recovered in a field close to an open mine shaft. The third suspect was apprehended and, along with his accomplice receiving medical treatment, will face charges of attempted murder. The suspect shot dead was identified based on information obtained from Johannesburg police, as a man simply known as Mnyamane.

Mnyamane had been reported by the community as being involved in numerous cases of murder and rape. The police recovered two firearms but the one Mnyamane used when fleeing through the field has yet to be recovered. Police confirm that an inquest docket has been opened as well as cases of attempted murder.
