Three men rob house after fooling domestic worker

Community members asked to be doubly vigilant this festive season

The persistence and gall of criminal elements knows no limits. Whether rehashing old tactics or sticking to trusted scams, those plotting to take what is not theirs will find no level which is too low to stoop to.

A Wilro Park domestic worker was the victim of a well-worn ruse yesterday, 12 November. Three males bullied the domestic worker in Boerneef Street into opening the gate, only for them to rob the house. The three men claimed to be from a company hired to fix something in the house and once access was gained, the inevitable ransacking ensued. Fortunately the domestic worker was not harmed, but valuable items were taken.

The suspects were reportedly all wearing blue overalls with high visibility reflectors and were driving a small white bakkie. Roodepoort Police spokesperson Captain Juanita-Anne Yorke confirmed that the incident took place, saying ”A docket has been opened and it is under investigation”. Captain Yorke wishes to remind the community to be doubly cautious and alert to possible dangers this festive season.

Domestic workers and their employers are also asked to increase their vigilance this festive season.

Police issued the following list of precautions for domestic workers to help increase their safety:

– When alone at home working, make sure that all the doors and windows are closed and locked

– Do not allow anyone, for example electricians and meter readers, onto the property before confirming with the homeowner that they are expected

– Do not go out to the gate unnecessarily, rather use the intercom or shout through the window

– Be careful when taking out or bringing in the rubbish bins. Look around for any suspicious people before opening the gate

– Be careful when hanging up or bringing in washing. Suspects can jump over the wall and attack you, so be aware of your surroundings

– Do not leave keys in the doors or security gates

– If there is a panic button, carry it at all times, preferably where it is not visible

– Make sure you always know an emergency number and the address where you are in case of an emergency

– Do not trust anyone and do not give out any information about the property or your employers

– Should you be a victim, contact the police as soon as possible
