Word of the day

The word of the day for 6 November is: discovery.

The Oxford English Dictionary defines ‘discovery’ as an act or process of finding someone or something, or learning about something that was not known about before.

James Joyce described mistakes as the portals of discovery. We cannot truly learn new things or make discoveries without the willingness to make mistakes. A mistake does not mean we have failed or that we cannot do something. A mistake presents us with the opportunity to learn and look at situations with a new perspective.

Marcel Proust said that the voyage of discovery is not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.

We need to try to look at things in a different, and sometimes more unconventional way, to see what others could not; to discover.

Dr Albert Szent-Györgyi said, “Discovery is seeing what everybody else has seen, and thinking what nobody else has thought”.

Discovery doesn’t necessarily mean that we are finding new land or a new species, sometimes it is just becoming more aware of what is around us and within us. Self-discovery is extremely important. You cannot expect to become a success, to find love, or to find happiness if you don’t know who you are.

Michelle Sandlin said, “There is no greater journey than the one that you must take to discover all of the mysteries that lie within you”.
