The long-overdue ongoing F46 Rand Water Pipeline project in Weltevreden Park is one construction project that has left residents fuming on a number of occasions, far more so than a mere power or water interruption could do.
Following countless completion dates that have come and gone, the project, assigned to Maziya General Service, is still under way, with uncertainty as to when it might be completed.
Ward 126 councillor, David Brand, discussed the latest developments with regard to the project.

“The contractor is still working in two places. One is on the corner of Amarant and JG Strydom Roads near Excel Park and the other is on 9th Avenue.
The site near Excel Park had to be left open so that Rand Water could come and do a cross-connection, a task Maziya couldn’t do. However, that’s been done and they are busy closing it off. At 9th Avenue, they had to reweld and realign the pipe,” he explained. He further explained that the delay on 9th Avenue was caused by connecting two pipes that are placed at different angles.
“There is one pipe that’s fairly close to the surface and another that is eight metres underground, that connect at a 45 degree angle. The joining piece had to be specially constructed, as there is no suitable piece on the market. The contractors had to cut a pipe into pieces and weld them together to make a correctly shaped connecting piece,” he explained.

When asked if this meant they would be done after the above-mentioned problems had been resolved, Brand said there were no guarantees, bearing in mind that they’ve missed most of the earlier deadlines. “They are going to work until they finish – working stage by stage because they aren’t accurate,” he said.
“I rely on them for information, but am being criticised for being inaccurate when I inform the public,” he said. “They can hang themselves with bad information instead of hanging me for it,” he went on, distancing himself from misinformation about the project.
