The condition of the bridge near Shoprite, on Third Avenue in Florida is causing concern among residents and Community Policing Forums.
The wall of the bridge is severely damaged and looks as if it could collapse at any time. Motorists travelling on Third Avenue and under the bridge (on Dan Street) are asked to please be alert to the possibility of damage to their vehicles and to proceed with caution.
Florida CPF posted a photo of the damaged bridge this morning, 29 October, with their chairperson (Riaz Jogee) expressing his concern for the safety of motorists and pedestrians making use of the bridge.
The issue was first reported yesterday, and the Ward 70 councillor, Caleb Finn, has been alerted. The issue has also been reported to the JRA, who are sending the relevant officials to assess the situation and determine a way forward.
The exact cause of the damage to the side of the bridge is not known, but it has been speculated that it was caused by a motor vehicle crashing into it.
According to Councillor Finn, as the bridge is over a railway line, it may be the responsibility of PRASA (The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa) to maintain it, but he has promised to keep residents updated on the situation.
More information about the repairs will be passed on as soon as it is received, but for now, motorists and residents are asked to please be vigilant.
