West Rand Toastmasters get creepy

The West Rand Toastmasters had yet another fun-filled evening, despite the load-shedding, which they used to enhance their spooky theme.

Meeting number 473 of the West Rand Toastmasters was dark in environment but never in heart.

The load-shedding, which was personified as the Queen of Darkness, helped the participants enhance the theme for the evening: Halloween. Throughout the evening, the word ‘Forged’ needed to be used in the speeches, a difficult task for some.

Candles set an eerie atmosphere as the meeting was called to order by Sergeant-At-Arms, Jeffrey Nkhwazi. As usual, the meeting was chaired by the West Rand Toastmasters’ president, Lynette Harris, who introduced Max Kaan as Toastmaster of the Evening.

The prepared speeches of the evening were as informative as ever, with Ines Leal, Jeanette Mokogosi, and Alwyn van Wyngaarden speaking about Seasonal Affective Disorder, poetry, and life.

A short adjournment took place for the Evaluators of the evening (who were joined by their president) to compare notes on the prepared speeches before Ernest Watkins was introduced for his first attempt at being Table Topics Chair. Members of the club then had to think on their feet when it became time for the Table Topics (Impromptu Speeches).

The Toastmasters in attendance then voted for the winners while Thato Majela presented the General Evaluation of the night. The evening’s awards were handed out and the meeting was drawn to a close.

The awards for the evening went to Lynette Harris (Best Evaluator), Alwyn van Wyngarden (Best Prepared Speech), and Max Kaan (Best Contributor).
