Six taxi operators were arrested this morning, Wednesday, 16 October, after they were caught red-handed by officers from the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) driving on the wrong side of Beyers Naudé Drive near the N1 Highway bridge.
JMPD spokesperson, Superintendent Wayne Minnaar told the Northsider that they were acting on a cry from the community, who felt endangered by the lawless acts of these taxi drivers.

“We received a complaint from the community about taxi drivers endangering the lives of other drivers as well as jeopardising the safety of commuters,” he said.

He added that two of the six drivers will face harsher charges after attempting to flee and bribe the officers. “One was charged for bribery after he tried with R100; the other driver made a U-turn trying to flee from the officers, further risking the lives of other motorists and commuters.

He was chased by our Superintendent who cornered him in his vehicle. He eventually tried running away on foot before he was apprehended. He also tried bribing the officer with R300. He has been charged with bribery and reckless/ negligent driving,” Minnaar explained.
