Bird fanatics invited to exotic bird expo
“Whether you have kept birds before, do so now, or would like to learn more about how to start, this will be the perfect opportunity..."
Bird lovers from the local community have been invited to the 10th annual Exotic Bird Expo taking place on 2 and 3 November at the Hillfox Value Centre in Weltevreden Park.
The two-day event has been organised by the Rand Avicultural Society (RAS), one of Johannesburg’s oldest bird clubs.
Mike Pidduck, one of facilitators of the event, detailed what enthusiasts can expect at the event. “Visitors to the expo will be able to view a broad cross-section of birds kept and bred by RAS members, with a big emphasis on finches, doves and softbills in particular. We will have about six aviaries and 15 show cages on display, each decorated by our members to portray their vision of an attractive aviary with their favourite combination of birds,” he said.
He added, “As well as the birds mentioned above, there will also be parrots and quail, both foreign (from many parts of the world), and African and South African species. All the South African birds on display are kept and displayed legally”.
Pidduck explained the purpose of the event. “The aim of the expo is to promote aviculture in general, and to attract more members to our ever-growing bird club and to this fascinating hobby that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, “he said.
“Whether you have kept birds before, do so now, or would like to learn more about how to start, this will be the perfect opportunity. It’s also a great place to share in the advice and tips learned by our members, who have vast knowledge and experience,” he said.
He mentioned that there will also be a section with birds for sale, to complement the expo.
“This is a wonderful opportunity to obtain some quality birds, mostly directly from our breeders. Entry to the expo is free and we welcome new members, and invite interested parties to participate.”
“If you would like to make use of this opportunity to join all this ‘bird-traffic’ and would like to sell any of your birds, please let us know ASAP as we are always in need of birds to sell,” Pidduck urged.
The event will take place from 10am to 5pm Saturday and 10am to 1pm on Sunday.
