Word of the day
“It is our choices that show who we truly are, far more than our abilities."
The word of the day for 8 October is: Choices.
‘Choice’ is defined as a range of possibilities from which one or more may be chosen.
There is an old fable about a Cherokee who wanted to give his grandson a life lesson on choices; the choice between right and wrong, which way to react, and how to go through life.
The Cherokee speaks about wolves that represent different emotions, and the wolf which will be dominant is the one you feed.
We need to feed our good wolf because in holding onto the bad emotions like resentment, we are only punishing ourselves.
J.K Rowling said, “It is our choices that show who we truly are, far more than our abilities.”
We can have abilities far superior to someone else, but how we handle ourselves and our emotions shows who we truly are.
In her books, Rowling often covers the topic of internal battles between right and wrong; that is part of the basis the character Draco Malfoy was built on.
In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Sirius Black says, “We’ve all got both light and dark inside us. What matters most is the part we choose to act on. That is who we really are.”
So which wolf will you feed? The light or the dark?
The Two Wolves.
An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life. “A fight is going on inside me,” he said to the boy. “It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil – he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.”
He continued, “The other is good – he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you – and inside every other person, too.”
The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?”
The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.”
