This morning, 7 October, residents of a Witpoortjie home were cleaning the smell of rotten meat off their driveway. The cause of this unusual Monday morning chore was meat thrown into their yard in an attempt to poison their dogs. The end goal of this unscrupulous meat donation, however, was the theft of their boat.

Charlene de Beer was woken in the early hours of the morning by her barking dogs. De Beer could see all the cars parked safely so thought nothing of it and returned to bed. When the family was readying themselves to leave for work, they discovered that their boat and the trailer it was mounted on had been removed. After breaking the gate track and pulling the gate open, thieves silently wheeled the boat out of the yard and into the night.

The boat has a two-tone white and brown paint job and has a Yamaha outboard motor. The boats’s registration number is SRSG91726R. The trailer is white with blue trim and its licence plate number is LBH 710 GP. The boat was purchased in April and the De Beer’s have only been residents at their property in Dromedaris Street since June. This incident follows the poisoning of another resident’s dogs in Dromedaris Street.

As for De Beer’s dogs, the larger of the two breeds seems to have survived. The smaller of her dogs is currently at the vet and it is unsure if it will pull through. De Beer was in the process of upgrading her home security and said, “We will see this as a learning curve. We hope this does not happen to anyone else.”
