Today in history: Hat-trick of Olympic medals is born

He won this hat-trick of Olympic medals at the 1920 Antwerp Olympic Games, while studying at the University of Oxford.

Bevil Gordon Rudd, the grandson of Charles Rudd, one of the founders of the De Beers diamond mining company, was born on 5 October 1894 in Kimberley, Northern Cape.

Bevil was educated at Saint Andrew’s College in Grahamstown and became the first South African to win a full set of Olympic medals.

He received a gold medal in the 400 metres, a silver medal in the 4 X 400 metres relay, and lastly a bronze in the 800 metres.

He won this hat-trick of Olympic medals at the 1920 Antwerp Olympic Games, while studying at the University of Oxford.

After completing his studies abroad, he moved back to South Africa, where he was appointed as a sports journalist. By 1930, he had become the editor of the Daily Telegraph.

Bevil Rudd passed away on 2 February 1948 in Kimberley, Northern Cape.
