Medical symposium sees professionals sharing new developments

A number of highly experienced specialists practicing at the hospitals shared their knowledge with the general practitioners.

Over 200 general practitioners from across the West Rand attended a continued professional development (CPD) event at Misty Hills in Muldersdrift at the end of August.

The South African Medical Association West Rand CPD Symposium is an event that provides the medical fraternity with the opportunity to hear of cutting-edge developments across a broad range of clinical specialties.

This event is hosted annually by Netcare Krugersdorp and Netcare Pinehaven hospitals in conjunction with MD Health Connection. During the event, a number of highly experienced specialists practicing at the hospitals shared their knowledge with the general practitioners on a wide variety of health conditions affecting the South African population.

Specialists who presented at the event included specialist physician, Dr S Khan; general surgeon, Dr F Docrat; and neurosurgeon, Dr AH Louw from Netcare Krugersdorp Hospital; as well as nephrologist, Dr M Variava; and cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr H Leluka from Netcare Pinehaven Hospital. The topics provided general practitioners’ with valuable information on diagnosing patients and appropriately referring patients to specialists.

“In addition to contributing to keeping general practitioners (GPs) abreast of latest advances in medicine through these CPD events, we believe that building sound working relationships between GPs and specialists facilitates a continuum of care for individuals in need of medical care, which is an important aspect in our aim of providing holistic, person-centred care to each patient,” Zeyn Asmal, general manager of Netcare Krugersdorp Hospital said.

The newly renovated 265-bed Netcare Krugersdorp Hospital has been serving the West Rand community for over 60 years. The hospital’s convenient location in Krugersdorp’s city centre (CBD), makes it easily accessible from all main roads serving the West Rand. Netcare Pinehaven Hospital, situated in Pinehaven Estate, opened in 2015. The facility has since expanded to incorporate an oncology centre offering radiation therapy and chemotherapy, and a renal dialysis unit managed by National Renal Care (NRC), bringing these highly specialised services to the doorstep of the West Rand community.

“We offer a comprehensive range of quality private healthcare services at both these world-class facilities, and we aim to provide our patients with the safest and most appropriate care in their journey to recovery. Our management teams, staff members, doctors and allied healthcare professionals strive to live the Netcare values of care, dignity, respect, passion and participation in our daily interactions with each person we care for, as well as their families,” adds Constance Majeke, acting general manager of Netcare Pinehaven Hospital.”
