66 years and still going strong

A Wilro Park couple have been happily married for 66 years and they say that respect, despite your differences, is what keeps a marriage happy.

Kobus and Bets Booyens have been married longer than many people have been alive. On 3 October, they will celebrate 66 years as a married couple.

Kobus worked as a superintendent for a railway station and after being relocated several times, he settled in Johannesburg where he met his future wife, who worked as a typist for the same company. The pair got married in 1953 in Krugersdorp and the rest is history.

Kobus has been retired for 33 years, and at the age of 92, he is still laughing and telling stories. Bets is just as positive. A few years younger than her husband, she cracks her stunning smile and still teases him.

The couple is now happily living out their retirement in an old age home in Roodepoort. According to them, the secret to such a long and happy marriage is respect. A couple needs to respect themselves and each other, from the day they fall in love and every day after. It does not just start with marriage; it starts when you date and continues through the engagement and marriage.
