Today in history: Brian Mitchell wins the WBA title
Mitchell defended the title for a world record 12 times and never lost a title fight before retiring in 1991.
Brian Mitchell is a former professional boxer and quite possibly the best South African boxer of all time.
In November 1985, he faced Jacob Morake for the fourth time and knocked him out in the last round to defend his South African Junior Lightweight Champion title, which he won in 1983.
The South African multi-titleholder won the WBA junior-lightweight title on 27 September 1986 when he defeated Alfredo Layne of Panama in Sun City by a tenth-round knockout to lift the title.
Mitchell defended the title for a world record 12 times and never lost a title fight before retiring in 1991.
He is now a successful boxing trainer with a stable of promising young boxers and has guided two boxers, namely Namibian Harry Simon and South African Cassius Baloyi, to world titles.
