“I say today, do not fear the road ahead, for we shall walk together, side by side, as we march as one to victory.” This was the rallying cry from Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga, when she gave her speech to the 9th SADTU National Conference at Nasrec, on 26 September.
It was in this speech that Minister Motshekga outlined her department’s 11 ‘strategic areas” as listed in the 2019–2024 Medium-Term Strategic Framework (MTSF). One of these strategic areas is the introduction of the General Education Certificate (GEC). This would be a school leaving qualification awarded after Grade 9. The field study for the GEC is scheduled for completion by the end of June 2020.
We want to know from you what you think of this idea? Do you think Grade 9 learners are equipped with the education and life skills to compete in the toughest labour market our nation has ever known?
Please take our poll and share any stories or ideas that could support the Minister and her department’s plan.
