Three bank branches to remain open on Friday
Not all bank employees are union members
A national strike in the banking sector is planned for this Friday, under the leadership of Sasbo, the financial trade union. However, the Westgate branches of Capitec Bank, Old Mutual and African Bank will not be participating in the strike.
Assistant branch manager of Capitec’s Westgate branch, Nicole Ngwenya, said that it would be business as usual on Friday. Ngwenya said, “The majority of our employees are not union members so they will all be at work. We do have one union member but it is that person’s day off anyway on Friday.”

Kgotso Khaute, branch manager of Old Mutual Westgate, said they would not be striking on Friday. ”No instruction was sent by head office so we will be at work”. Khaute continued, “Our branch is mainly sales based and these days off interfere with salespersons’ targets.”

Comment from African Bank was received late on Wednesday. African Bank confirmed that their branch at Westgate would also remain open. Should there be any security concerns, however, they would asses that on the day.
The head office of Nedbank was also approached for comment but none was forthcoming. The public is bracing for a stressful payday weekend with widespread disruptions predicted throughout the country.
