Eagle House School (EHS) in Poortview played host to the first Rover Fest event which saw youngsters from across the province descend on the property for a common cause.
The youngsters ranging from 18 to 30 years old, who form part of the Gauteng Rovers scouts, spent two days (21 and 22 September) on the property and travelled around the Roodepoort area to fulfill various tasks that they had set aside for themselves.

Organised by Joshua Kretzschmar, the Gauteng Rover Advisory Council (GRAC) chairperson, a council that oversees and guides various crews, he explained to the Northsider what they were about and the type of activities they got to do.
“The event was a challenge-set event that allowed the Rovers to do multiple activities which got them busy the whole weekend and in return taught them new skills and provided a networking opportunity,” he explained.
Part of the activities which the members had to choose from included crafts, social intelligence, fitness, games, cooking and community outreach.
“For community outreach, they went out to CLAW and assisted the shelter with the animals and also planted a vegetable garden,” he said.
Sophia Rudham, the 1st Greenside Rover chairperson, added on how the experience impacted their lives. “This was fun because we got to do some things that were meaningful and also got an opportunity to sign up for things that we wouldn’t have normally done outside of this like being part of a zumba class, which was cool and enjoyable,” she explained.
Although, this was the first event, Joshua hoped to hosts many others as part of his legacy project. Beside organising this successful event, he mentioned that they also host other number of events such as Pop Bolton, a regional inter-crew competition, once a year and GRAC which happens four times a year.
“GRAC is the forum where we all meet together and discuss issues that we as Rovers are a facing and also plan any joint activities that we wish to get involved in”, Tessa de Klerk, a GRAC member, elaborated.
After the fun-filled two days, Joshua encouraged interested individuals between 18 and 30 of age, who wish to join the Rovers, to contact him on the following details:
